Life Lessons From Your Soul - Big Fat Awesome News!!!

I have a weekly show on wheat free, dairy free and chemical free cooking. I share recipes that I originally published in my first cookbook written over 8 years ago at my former Bed & Breakfast, Harmony Oaks in Saluda, South Carolina. I also previously taught cooking classes at Earth Fare Whole Foods Market in Columbia, South Carolina. At the B&B, we served only wheat free, dairy free and mostly organic foods. Life Lessons from Your Soul - Asking For Help

Yesterday while walking on the beach, I called a friend of mine to see if she could come out and walk with me. She had been sick with a nasty stomach flu and was staying inside. As we talked for a few moments, I thought to myself; "Offer to go to the store for her . . .". It is my nature to help people who need it. Sometimes I do this to a fault, neglecting my own needs for another. I chose to hold myself back from asking her if she needed me. I wished her well and we hung up the phone.

A few minutes later, she called me back and she asked for help. I immediately gave it to her saying I'd be happy to go to the store for her and help her in her time of need. We talked about how hard it was for her to ask for my help and I shared how hard it was for me to not automatically give it.

How is it that we have come to live in a world where asking for help is so difficult that we over analyze the situation to the point where giving and receicing have become arduous tasks? There are so many schools of thought that tell us not to be too much of something we naturally are because we might over give or ask for more than we 'deserve'. Isn't it our birthright to ask for what we need and just trust that someone in our lives will be available to provide it for us?

I was ashamed that I did not just step up to the plate and offer help. She was ashamed that she did not just step up to her plate and ask for help. We were in a lock down of helplessness in an incredibly obvious situation where providing help was so unbelievably simple in this amazingly complex city where help is rarely around the corner.

My friend and I learned a valuable life lesson yesterday. Just be yourself. If you feel compelled to offer help and you have the time to do it. Just do it. If you need help, simply ask for it and KNOW you 'deserve' it just by virtue of the fact that you are a human being in need.

Thank you my friend for showing me what I already knew. Help is always around the corner.

Life Lessons from Your Soul - Feeling Love

Recently, someone dear to me asked me a question that sent me on a journey of self exploration. It was an unexpected quest I embarked upon but a fulfilling one. The question was this:

"When do you feel love?"

My immediate answer was "I am love. How would I not feel it?"

At that moment, I looked out at the sea and saw Dolphins swimming by. I ran to the glass doorway and said "I'm feeling love right now!! The Dolphins connect me to love."

I continued asking myself that question and found that I feel love more often than I would have thought I did and under more circumstances than I thought I would. I also found that simply through entering the awareness of that question, I essentially uped my "love quotient" by noticing when I felt love.

When do you feel love? What connects you to the feeling of love and what does not? Can you still feel love in the darkness of a difficult situation? Can you attemt to?

Enter into the richness of this quest. You too may be surprised.

There are many things you can do this Holiday Season to gain access to our inherent ability to love and be loved. "Let it out, let it in" as the Beatles sing. Give, receive and allow. Find your own song and sing it with fervor! Be Love.

Life Lessons From Your Soul - Holiday Family Tips

Holiday's traditionally bring out the child within as we visit parents, siblings and extended family members to celebrate the honored tradition of our families through holiday togetherness. This is the time of the year when colds are caught, aches and pains are more painful and general emotional swings are had by many.

Our families of origin bring out the best and the worst in us. They are the original teachers who awaken the patterns we travel into this life with. Parents and siblings are the wayshowers of our dark sides. The darkness is simply there to teach about the lightness of who we really are. As we struggle with the classic battle within us between the negative and positive emotions, we energetically choose family that will help us develop our personalities to evolve into the treasures of our souls.

So, here are some things to think about as you spend time with family:

Families will trigger you into the negative aspects of your personality until you choose the power of your soul to bring light to the situation. If you are playing to an old drama with your mom, for instance, in which she brings up your irritability, please know that you do not have to remain a slave to that old pattern. Your greatest triumph in that pattern will come when you have accepted that your mom is like that and you cannot change how she relates to you. You can, however change how you relate to the old drama and how you relate to your mother.

You can change this pattern through accessing acceptance by inviting it into the drama. When acceptance of yourself is present, it becomes easier to accept your mother. One way to accept her is to appreciate her. Take your irritation and turn it into appreciation. Make a list of what she is great at. Be grateful you have a mother who wants you there with her during the holidays. Be grateful that she has a home for you to come to. Find anything and everything to be grateful for when it comes to your mom. Notice her wonderful qualities and how you express them in your daily life. Stick with this no matter how hard it may be for you.

The soul expresses itself in qualities. Your mother passed her qualities to you - or more accurately - you already had these qualities and attracted your mother to bring them out in you. Focus on what ever those qualities may be - enthusiasm, acceptance, diplomacy, kindness, loving, caring, thoughtfulness, appreciation. Those are all qualities of the soul that the personality has the free will to access and expand upon any time you desire to.

If you are aware enough that you have attracted this article into your sphere, know that you are the one who has what you need to shift the dynamics between you and your family members. Each one of them has their perceptions, their point of view on the dramas that occur. Do not forget that they operate from thier point of view just as you do. They are likely not self aware and cannot see the drama from the perspecitve of the observer - the soul as you can. You have this level of awareness. See the drama for the illusion that it is and make a different choice - choose love.

Lately I have been in creation mode. I have been getting a new website developed. I have been meeting with amazing people who are possible partners for me and my work (details to come). In November, I fly to DC for Thanksgiving with my family. I will also be going to Columbia South Carolina to work with clients and to teach a workshop. I will be in Columbia from the 14th-19th of November. I will be working in Dr. Darcy Luadzers office on Calhoun Street across from the Governers Mansion on Friday and Saturday of that weekend. From November 19-27, I will be in Arlington, Virginia with my family. I will see clients in the DC area on Friday and Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend. That Sunday, I will conduct the same workshop for the folks in DC. I am so excited about this trip!!!

In December, I will be in Houston, Texas for my Nephew's wedding on the 15th. But first, I go to Austin, Texas where I will be working with clients and also conducting a my Earth School workshop. I will be in Austin the weekend of the 8th of December. I will also see individual clients there. I am truly thrilled to be traveling, teaching, speaking and working with clients. Folks, this is my dream life. Everyone who comes to see me or takes my workshop - I thank you all for making my dream come true!! You are all awesome!!!

Another great thing that is happening is that I have the absolute honor of being invited to world class editor, Stephanie Gunning's anthology on creativity. Life Lessons from You Soul - Hollywood "Ethics"

The word 'ethics' and Hollywood don't fit well in the same sentence. I walked into my first Hollywood lesson with the part I got in the Heinz commercial. You know, the one with 'no pay'. I asked the casting director/producer what the commercial was for. (Intuitively, I smelled a rat and wanted to poke around a bit to see what he was up to.) He told me it was for a commercial contest. So I Googled 'Heinz commercial competition'. It turns out the winner gets $57,000.00.

I come from the world of Metaphysics. It's a world where sharing the wealth is not only ethical, moral, reasonable and integrous, it is our birthright. I felt empowered when I called up the talent agency to find out what the industry standard was in a case such as this. The agency told me that when money is made off of my image after a spec commercial gets picked up, it is in fact the standard for the production to pay the actor in arrears for the work. He said to go back to the producer and ask him to sign a contract that would pay me a daily rate if he does, in fact win. He also said that if he refused, to NOT taked the job because he is 'not a decent human being'.

I went to the producer to ask and left a detailed voicemail. He did not return my phone call. Two days later, only a day and a half prior to the shoot, I e-mailed him asking for a contract. He e-mailed the day before saying "We won't be needing you for this project . . ." I knew it!!! He was one of those Hollywood types that gives all of them a bad name. He makes money off of the work of others while they starve, reel in hand and 'credit' for a commercial when commercials don't have credits.

Was I upset by all this? NO WAY!! Was I empowered by this? ABSOLUTELY!! When someone you know chooses to act with no integrity and you say yes to it by compromising yourself, you will always end up feeling bad about what you did. People like this will continue to operate in the world as long as others agree to their lack of integrity. I felt so empowered that I said no. I felt so strong that I did not participate when my gut told me not to. I was not the least bit disappointed in his choices. They were his choices. He did not do it to intentionally hurt anyone. He only did it to serve himself. People like that create their own misery. And that kind of thing never goes unnoticed by the nonphysical world.

Life Lessons from Your Soul - Unexpected Change nearing 40

My friend Tuck - The Rebel Belle http://www.therebelbelle.com/ uses a tool called Human Energy Design. Last week I was on a free teleseminar with her about the different energy types within this complex system of interpreting human energy.

I am a Manifesting Generator. Tuck says this type "rules the world!" (She is one too!) She says that many people will watch us go through our lives in dismay at how we make our choices and lead our lives. They may think we don't stick with things or are flighty. The truth is we are just being led by our powerful energy centers to go, create, do and become. It helped me to learn this. I have been this way all of my life and have annoyed people - like my parents - who never understood me. Worse yet, I tried to change to fit the mold of how I was 'supposed' to be. It was an Rx for misery. It helped to know it was in my energy make-up. Tuck went on to share that when we are presented with an idea, there is an immediate response with an "uh-uh" (no!) or an "uh-huh" (yes!)

The most recent unexpected shift in my life came the day Starla Fortunato http://www.starlafortunato.com/ took my pictures. I feel - for the first time - they really show how I look - soul and all. She really captured ME. The 'unexpected thing' happened during the day long shoot. I kept seeing a website with the pictures from the shoot on it. It was a website for modeling & acting??? What??? Where did that come from???

I felt that drive to get the photos out there to casting agencies and so I did. It was a big 'uh-huh' in my gut. I also had numerous people tell me I should model after seeing the pictures. I got the first job I applied for - a commercial for Heinz. I play a mom at a picnic. It is what is called a 'Spec Commercial'. That translates into 'no pay' BUT, I can begin to make a reel, gain experience and have something to show the big guns so I can get paying jobs. Evidently, that is what they recommend in a business where they want a reel before you can even land a job.

So why is Dr. Meg doing this? The huge "uh-huh" was the biggest part of why for me. I allow my life to be guided by that. It is in walking into the lesson that I learn about the why. The next reason is that I am in my office one-on-one or by myself most of the time. I love people and I thought this would be a great way to meet them. I also think this could be alot of fun! AND, if it can grow my financial prosperity - BRING IT ON!!!

I never know what the plan for me may be. Goal setters out there may be gasping at the moves I make. I think you're a different type! I have my goals and everything I do supports them even when it looks like they don't. I try the "uh-huh" and regroup if it doesn't work long haul. Life Lessons from Your Soul - My Life Review

On August 10, I have a big birthday. I turn 40 years old. The great news is I look like I'm 29 - in fact, I look 10 years younger today than I did 5 years ago. I have finally realized I am an incredibly beautiful woman - both inside and out. I recently had a photo shoot with a phenomenal celebrity photographer. I went to write in my journal tonight and felt strongly guided to write in my blog instead. The pull was so huge I had to honor it. I decided to write for all to see what my life is like right now. It's not a gimmick or a way to get more business - it's a way to share me and my process. My proceess is yours - just as my clients' processes become mine too. So read, comment if you like and get ready for the raw life of a Spiritual Psychotherapist about to turn 40 living in Los Angeles and wondering how the heck she got here!

So many people expect me to be strong for them. I listen to clients yelling on the phone to me about their lives. I help them trudge through their darkest valleys and I am here for them to cry, rant, rave and share. I love it. I love to help and listen and learn from the very wisdom that flows through me in my sessions. So often something comes out of my mouth for a client that is exactly what I need to hear. I will marvel at the brilliance of all that wisdom and thank my soul for sending it through - and my personality for allowing it to happen!

The dark side of the love for what I do is that I don't take the best care of me. I give to others so easily and willingly and have little left to give to me - not always but often enough to notice. I often buy the lie that I have to be strong for everyone else and keep the chin up even when I feel alone and afraid and scared. I get to be human too and in that frailty, I can still feel as though I never healed one ounce of what I have. Then I write it down or tell a friend or have a healing session and I feel renewed.

I remember that my teachers told me that the path would be harder for me than most - they say it always is for the one who is to teach many. So far the many have not materialized and that confuses me too. Still I know there's way more than a few but not the masses then I wonder if I am doing something wrong or if I missed the opportunity becasue I was sullen that day. Then I plod on. I do it because I must. It is just in me to keep going.

So this is me reviewing my life. The things I 'thought' I would have done by now or where I thought I would be are simply not in my life. I thought I would be happily married with four children. I am twice divorced and childless. I thought I would be a best selling author traveling the world speaking teaching and writing more. I have two unfinished book proposals sitting in this very computer, I haven't spoken to a group (other than a group of girlfriends or in a speaker's workshop) in over two years and have only left Los Angeles in the last two years to see my family in DC. I thought I would be financially properous with a couple of properties around the country, my debt paid and living comfortably. I have more debt than ever and have no idea how I am going to pay rent this next month - again!

All the rules that we hear in the self help communities - I have followed them all. I have affirmed myself to the stars, I have visualized what 'I want' adnauseum. I have blamed myself for when things did not go the way I saw it thinking 'I must not be doing this right'. I have repeated 'cancel, cancel' when I did not say the 'right' thing. I have pondered the creation of reality each and every day for years - over a decade now. I have stayed in integrity paying my bills as I said I would and eating rice for dinner or going without in so many ways I'm embarrased to write them down. I have been honest in my romantic relationships and endured lies and infidelity from nearly all of them.

Here's what I sense is happening. I sense that I am living my story - just as we all are. I am learning about acceptance, perseverance, detachment, compassion for self, honesty, duplicity, being real, letting go, really about just being me - rather than fighting every impulse that seems 'negative' because it's 'not spiritual'. I am learning to trust that there is a plan for me and my judgements about there being a 'better' one are simply that - judgements. I am learning about accepting the amazing life I do have - about gratitude, faith and hope. If I did not have these experiences, how could I really do that? I am also learning that my idea of what 'should be' is not in alignment with what is.

I cannot control this life. None of us can. We can set our goals and send out our prayers and sometimes we just have to wait. I, for one, am not going to join the ranks of all those self help guru's who refuse to admit they too have a dark side. I know that when any of us ignore that part of the self, we ignore God talking to us.

So, this is my life right now. I am human. It gets difficult. It gets euphoric. It gets diverse. It gets arduous. It gets fun. I guess I do have it all. Whether the tide turns or stays as it is, I accept the flow of my life. I thank you God for all you have given me. The blessings - I have so many. I thank you for all those who love me and most of all for your love as it sustains me and shines from my eyes, my heart and every part of my being and beyond. I love you. I love me.

Life Lessons from Your Soul - Being Spiritual

I hear many people say "He's so spiritual" or "She's so deeply spiritual". It's as if there's a point of measurement for what being spiritual is, as if you can have an amount of it. Give me a heaping helping of being spiritual, please.

What is being spiritual? How does one measure spirituality? Is being spiritual found in the kinds of food you eat or how often you meditate in an ashram? Is being spiritual about the number of books you read or how much you pray? No. You may connect with your spirit through meditation, prayer, ashrams or through spiritual teachers but none of those things are ways to determine just how spiritual you are.

Being spiritual is coming to know yourself as a part of divine consciousness. One reveals your spiritual nature within the mysteries of discovering yourself as God. It is in the delving within the self that we can each attain true freedom through knowing ourselves as an emanation and reflection of the divine. No one, not even you can measure where you are within that awareness.

You may sense that you are further developed in knowing yourself as God than the person sitting in front of you. But, that is never meant to be a way to further separate you from those around you. Separation through competition of being "better" than others is hard enough to deal with around five sensory, unconscious beings. Entering spiritual superiority provides no room for true growth in our ever advancing world of consciousness.

Look honestly at you and your spiritual life. Are you feeling superior to the pastor next door? Are you thinking Jane in apartment 510 is nowhere near as advanced as you are? Do you believe your parents are beneath you because you are awake and they are not?

We are, all of us, spiritual beings in varying degrees of consciousness. We have the ability to weild our free will to love and accept others - as they are - where ever they are. That same free will power is used to help each one of us choose to develop ourselves further. Wield your will wisely and choose to reveal yourself for you.

Afterall, you are a spiritual being having a human experience. Choose wisely. It is one of your greatest spiritual powers.

Life Lessons from Your Soul - Letting Go

It seems there's always something coming up to let go of. There's perhaps a relationship that is not beneficial to you any longer that must be released, there's a pattern that continually occurs that must be severed or there's a house full of clutter that has to be cleared. What ever is in your life that must go, it is there for your learning, growth and development.

Only you can make the choice to release something. Even if another person fires you from a job, breaks off a relationship, or seems to take something from you that hurts, it is up to you to let go of the ensuing emotions that come with it.

It is the emotional attachment you have to the pattern, the person, the thing or even your own self deprecation that can keep you heavy laden and locked up. When you find that emotion - say it is anger - ask it why it is there? What lesson does it bring with it? Why do you hold on to it and how can you let it go? Extract the essence of the lesson, release it from your mind, body and spirit and let it go.

When you have truly released the thing that seemed impossible to go, you will know because you will now see a new experience coming to you that is lighter than the last. You have created the opportunity for a more evolved energy to enter your heart. You have said no to the old idea and showed the Universe you are ready for the new.

Does it mean it will all be easy and perfect now. No. You can bet it will be perfect in what ever form comes to you as it will be exactly what you need.

Life Lessons from Your Soul - A Teacher Who Can Help You

In 1999, I met Tuck Self who is now known as The Rebel Belle www.rebelbelleblog.com Tuck came to my Bed & Breakfast and healing Retreat Center in South Carolina way back then to give me a presentation on Nikken products - or at least that's what we thought was happening. What really ended up happening was Tuck became my first client in South Carolina and I became the spiritual counselor whom she credits as the one who catapulted her on her spiritual journey.

Today, Tuck is the Rebel Belle - a woman of bold self expression who assists other women in finding theirs. She has an incredibly creative way of teaching women through many different avenues to find their true voices.

Life Lessons from Your Soul - Choosing Love

If you are on my e-mail list, you received my 3 rules for living over the course of three weeks. If you're not on the list and would like to receive e-mails from me, go to www.doctormeg.com and enter in your name and e-mail address. I am not a daily e-mailer so don't worry about your inbox being filled by me. The most you will see is once, maybe twice a week e-mails.

The third rule for living is "Always Choose Love". This can mean one thing to one person and something very different to another.

For instance, say you are in a relationship that continually feels abusive and confining. You may stay with the person out of commitment or the desire to not create heart break for the them. You may feel as though you are choosing love by intentionally choosing to not rock the boat. What you may be choosing is sacrificing your own heart to stay with that person.

Examining this role may well be a part of your understanding of choosing love. You may then remain until you have gathered what you need to move on. You may have gathered soul qualities like strength, patience, tolerance, acceptance and love for yourself. When you have a sufficient supply of what you need to choose love for YOU, then you can move on to find one with whom you will be better suited.

When you release one thing that is no longer appropriate for you, you then free up the enegetic space for something else to come in. When you choose love, you choose what is best for you and your growth. It may be difficult to do so but you also set the other person free to do what they need to do.

Life Lessons From Your Soul - Success

Have you ever really examined success? There are many definitions of what being successful means. On the personality level, it typically refers to someone who does everything the 'right' way and makes a lot of money doing it. Sometimes, it just means the person makes a lot of money.

Recently, I attended a workshop on success where each person got to write out their definition of success. It was a great exercise to think about what I feel being successful means. It certainly included the earth school requirement of money and living well but that was not the defining measure of success to me.

To me, being successful requires being the best person I can be. It comes down to integrity, truth and being of service to others who may be in need of the very kind of help I provide. It means being a wayshower in the raising of the consciousness of humanity.

As I looked at my definition, I saw that many of the people who are regarded as highly successful in our world, actually are not to me. I felt that if people were taking advantage of one another, lieing, stealing, bullying and cheating to get their tons of money then they had money but not success.

It was a wonderful examination that led me to feel more successful than I ever had because I am doing all the things that being successful requires to me. The abundance to keep being the success I am will follow - it always has and I trust it always will.

Life Lessons From Your Soul - Meaning

There is a popular teaching out there in the self-help world that says; "Nothing means anything except what you make it mean." For me, this phrase always carried feeling of being devoid of something very important. 'Nothing' and 'anything' carry with them a finality that is inescapable. One of the biggest deep-seated fears of the human existance is, in fact, nothingness which can translate into meaninglessness. Pretty soon, one can feel dug into a hole by the limited nature of such expressions.

The above mentioned expression can absolutely be true when you place meaning upon a locket that your Grandmother gave to you. But does that locket no longer have meaning when it's no longer in your possession? Does it lose its meaning sitting in your jewelry box or if you find out something terrible about your Grandmother? There seems to be an arrogance to the expression that assumes that only humans can lend meaning to things. The expression is wholely human and without Divinity. That's why it feels empty . . .

To reframe the expression into truth, it would go something like this: "Everything has meaning whether you know what it is or not." The mountains and sky do not get their meaning from me. They are inherent with deep meaning because they are a part of the all that is. Everything is a part of the Divine. I may lend them deeper meaning than the person sitting next to me but that comes from my personality. The truth is felt with the unending energy of the soul.

When you feel limited by a popular expression that does not ring of truth to you, it is an expression that comes from the impermanent personality. When you feel set free from the expressions that fall upon your ears and heart, you have heard an undeniable message of the soul. If you feel the void in something, you can examine it for truth. When you discover the truth, you then fill the void with love.

Life Lessons From Your Soul - Rejection

We all will go through rejection and its ensuing effects throughout our lives. One of the things that can make the stinging effects of rejection so much worse than need be is the level of attachment that we have to the thing that we 'think' we want. When our personalites attach to our wants we can set ourselves up for pain in rejection.

The natural state of the soul is detachment. It knows your life path and sends you your lessons accordingly. Our lessons are learned from the choices that we make. Our choices are made from both our conscious and unconscious minds simultaneously. The ability to observe yourself within the experience of your lesson is the bird's eye viewpoint of the soul.

The lesson of rejection is trust. Our personalities call upon our soul's energy to access the quality of trust. What you learn to trust is that not everything you think you want is how you will best serve others or best be served. Within your rejection experience and its ensuing emotions lie the gift of a different possibility that you may not have thought of. The possibility will unfold for you when you let go of something. That something will be up to you as it is different for each of us.

Belief in the possibility that there is a better experience on the other side of your rejection coupled with trust, faith and surrender will see you through your rejection experience. You will see. Soon, what you were attached to will be a distant memory of your soul's lesson and something more will come along.

Life Lessons From Your Soul - Romantic Love

February is the month of love and Saint Valentine's Day is the day of celebration of love of all kinds. Romantic love is what most people think about on this chosen day of love. What is romantic love anyway?

In many ways, romantic love is a delicious, tasty illusion that brings two souls together for the purpose of creation and evolution. A romantic partner is one of the greatest opporutnites for us to evolve as souls through our personalities. They reflect back to us what we love about ourselves and eventually, they show us what we don't love all that much. Our romantic partners are our wayshowers to help us unveil who we really are through presenting us with healing opportunities.

Romantic love can lead you down many pathways. You may have the experience of mad, passionate, head over heels craziness. You may have a tumlutuous, thunder clap of dizzying madness. You may have a love unrequited. You may have a smooth, easy, peaceful ride on calming seas or you may have a tiny spark that grows into a roaring fire over time.

What ever leads you into a romatic partnership comes from what the two created in the past and desire to create for the future. You may experience many emotions in romance that bring you to this connection with another. How ever it happens for you, is your story or pathway to love and relationship. Each path will be different.

The dizziness, hormones, craziness and passion usually subside over time. This does not always mean you are no longer 'in love' with your mate. It simply means that the nature of your love is shifting to a more realistic rendering of relationship. Look at what you do have with one another. Do you honor, respect, enjoy and have faith in one another? These qualities of the spirit will see you through the smoldering embers of your beginnings. As you grow these qualities in your partnership, you will create a lasting, deep and meaningful bond of two souls who have come together to evolve with one another.

Life Lessons From Your Soul - Victims

Everyone knows what it is like to feel victimized by someone else. We have all been betrayed or hurt by another. We have all been through difficulties at the hands or sharp tongues of others. The victim and abuser cycle is as old as time and an archetypal story that gets played over and over, each and every day.

Abusers need victims and victims need abusers in order to keep the cycle going. As a victim, you agree to the cycle of abuse as long as you stay and take it. As an abuser, you will always find a victim who is willing, on some level to continue they cycle of abuse. Victim and abuser are, in fact, two sides of the same coin. One cannot exist without the other.

We live in a society that has a tremendous respect for the victim. We have an entire legal system that is dedicated to ensuring the victims are set free and the abusers are caught and put away - even if it does not always work that way.

We all must travel through the archetype of victim and abuser. It is the classic hero's journey. Our personalities experience this through the lessons of the soul. In this pairing, we are being taught the lessons of responsibility. We are being asked to look at what we have done to contribute to this classic story. What did we say yes to that directly compromised ourselves? How can we make a different choice next time that no longer perpetuates the cycle of victimization? You will know. The truth will come within the lessons.

If you feel you are being victimized by someone, what are you saying yes to? If you are using your victimization to get the sympathies of others, are you victimizing those you are manipulating for attention? Look deeply and be honest. If you are in victim, the abuser will be present. Where can you take responsibility for you?

Call upon your strength to help you answer the tough questions. Allow your soul to teach you responsibility or what ever your lesson may be. You are responsible for you, no one else is. Give the gift of respect to yourself and claim 'victim no more'.

Life Lessons From Your Soul - Patience

Hurry up and wait! Patience is a virtue. Good things come to those who wait. Don't quit right before the miracle occurs. There are numerous sayings we call upon when we feel as though we are in a holding pattern. We try to ease the pain of not knowing what we want to know by reminding ourselves that patience is a necessary virtue worth striving for.

Patience brings with it the opportunity to build spiritual qualities. Built into patience is the opportunity to learn endurance, strength, and fortitude. There are necessary companions to patience. Perhaps the most well known is faith. Patience actually requires faith that what you are waiting for will come to pass - even if it's not quite how you envisioned it.

If you think of patience as a structure you are building, you know that high quality building materials will make the best and longest lasting building you can make. So, when you are patiently wating for something to manifest in your life, remember the best laid plans require patience, faith, hope, trust, surrender, caring and love.

Enjoy the building process then watch your waiting time come to a close only to bring in a stronger you.

Life Lessons From Your Soul - Visualizing What you Desire

It is a popularly held belief in personal development that if you visualize something, anything, you can create it into being. So, we all see the man we desire, the home we want to live in the monetary goal we want to achieve. We sit in our homes with our eyes closed and we say our affirmations over and over to get what we desire.

When we practice visualization and it does not come to fruition, we can feel like we failed. When we affirm things and they don't come into physical reality, we can get frustrated with our ideas about how things 'should' happen.

Frustration and failure are just the messengers sent to you to learn to let go of something. What if the something you are being asked to let go of is the expectation that things should come to you in exactly the way you picture them? What if all you did was to take your personalities' need to control a situation and just placed that on your spiritual development as well as your life circumstances?

The personality will want to control the way things happen. The soul is fluid. It functions best when the personality lets go of what it thinks it should have in order to be happy, prosperous, beautiful and meaningful.

You don't have to stop picturing what you desire to create or stop setting goals. Just know that things come in the form that is best suited for your learning and development. That form is perfect in and of itself - even if it does not produce a joy ride for you.

Just trust that the lessons that are coming your way are best for you. Being conscious does not mean that you will control how things come to you through your personality. Being conscious means that you will allow all things to come to you and trust that they are here for your evolution and growth as a soul.

Life Lessons From Your Soul - The Unconscious Mind

So much has been surmised about the unconscious mind that there seems to be little left to be said. The unconscious is that of which we are unaware. For each person, the level of conscious awareness differs depending on their personal evolutionary state. Consciousness simply refers to awareness. As you become more aware, you become more conscious.

I have come to believe, with much introspection and observation of myself and others, that the unconscious mind is actually the soul communicating to us through our actions and reactions. So many seem to think that the unconscious mind is the sabatoging protagonist in our life stories. It's sets out to attack us at every turn to 'show us' who is in charge. What we do not know seems to run the show of our lives.

Perhaps the unconscious mind is far more innocuous than many give it credit for. Perhaps it is simply the soul's way of saying "Hey look, here is something for you to learn from . . ." Perhaps we attract the experience of our lives through what we do not know in order to bring forth what we need to know. If we are here to learn and evolve, the unconscious mind/soul is the greatest teacher to our deeper understanding and evolutionary process.

The personality will invariably place its judgements on the unconscious mind. That is to be expected. If the personality works in dualities like judgement and mercy, then the soul must find a way to resolve the conflict of the personality. It sends the lesson by bringing into the conscious what may have been unconscious for our learning, not for our punishment. The lesson is to extract the vital essence of the story and move on through becoming more conscious.

Life Lessons From Your Soul - Physical and Spiritual Proximity

No matter how near or far a person is from you in physical proximity, nothing can compare to the spiritual closeness inherent in the connection you have with them. The truth is that all of our souls are connected. The feeling of connection works to greater or lesser degrees based on the soul agreements we make with others in our soul groups. Nothing will keep souls apart who have agreed to work through something together.

The personality believes that near and far are relative terms. You can only be close with someone who lives in your town, state or general area. Maybe you open to the possibility of being close to someone within the same country in which you live. What ever you believe about location, physical distance and relationships will be the limits placed on closeness by your personality.

The soul knows that distance will never break the bond of souls. No matter what earthly obstacles ensue, you will be with whomever you have agreed to be with. It will happen somehow, some way.

Allow your personality to pay attention to the messages sent to you from the soul through your emotions and through the signs around you. Simply pay attention and trust that you will create with whomever you have agreed to be with. Remember that your souls may have only agreed to the time it takes to smile at someone or they may have agreed to a life time. You will know when you allow your agreement to unfold before you.

Life Lessons From Your Soul - Surrender

The personality is so great at hanging on to an idea, a plan, a person, a thing or what ever it sets it's sites on. When we really want something to go a certain way, we can cling to that thought like our lives depend upon it.

We may hang on to a relationship that is no longer serving us. We may hang on to a business that is draining us. We may hang on to a way of life that does not demonstrate who we really are on the inside. What ever we hang on to that usurps our personal power will hurt us in some fashion.

A function of the soul is surrender. To surrender is to truly let go of the idea or the person or the thought that we cling to with desperation. The main ingredient needed to surrender is trust. We access the feeling of trust through letting go of the desperation that has shown up to teach us about trust.

Just know the truth. You are not in control. When you allow your experience to unfold before you, you create greater possibilities than the personality could plan upon. Go ahead and let the personality plan but when you begin to white knuckle a situation in your life, step aside and let the soul take over with trust and surrender.

When Pandora's box was opened, all hell broke loose and the forces of darkness were released into the world. There was only one thing left at the bottom of her box when all else was spent. That one thing was hope.

Hope is a quality of the soul. It is a force without form that can become as large or as small as we can allow it to be. We tap into this force using the twin sister of hope - faith.

Because the intangible twins of faith and hope have no mass, their potential power is limitless. The only limitation of these currents of the soul come from the personality of the one who chooses to access them or not.

Life Lessons From Your Soul - Unexplainable Choices

Some choices are made long before you find yourself participating in them. These choices are the most difficult to comprehend. The feeling is that there was no choice. This feeling is derived from the nebulous and powerful force called fate.

We may be quick to write off the unexplained choice as a stupid mistake. We can allow the overwhelming negative emotion that prevails to over rule what the soul is trying to tell us. When we allow the negative emotion (aka teaching emotion) to over ride the calling of our hearts, we can miss the lesson our soul is showing us.

In the movie "The Matrix" the Oracle says; "You cannot see beyond a choice you do not understand." This is truth. When you find yourself within the experience of this truth, pay attention to the emotions that have shown up to teach you.

Remember that your emotions connect your personality with your soul. The soul knocks on the door of your heart. It is up to your personality to make the choices going forward that lead you to the understanding of your unexplainable choice.

Know that what often seems like a powerless choice can actually be the most powerful one you can make. Call upon the power of surrender to allow the subsequent choices to unfold before you.

You cannot make a wrong choice. When you enter the mystery of your choice, you enter the conscious evolutionary process of your developing soul.

Life Lessons From Your Soul - Truth

There is a big difference between what is true and what is truth. For instance, it may be true that you believe that men are smarter than women but the truth is intelligence has nothing to do with gender. When a person is wrapped up in what they decide is true for them, the truth will not be readily welcome. They will fight it tooth and nail while using the universal bandaid of the personality - denial.

If anyone comes to remove the bandaid of denial, the wounds that created the conflict with the truth will be opened. It then becomes a battle between the personality and the soul as to which force will win out. The soul runs on truth. The personality runs on what is true. What is true can be an engineered version of the personality designed to keep the truth from surfacing.

The classic battle within regarding what is true and what the truth is will be waged within each one of us here in earth school. It may happen in some areas in our lives and not in others. It will happen though.

To examine truth, begin to look at the lies you tell yourself about your life. What are you covering with the denial bandaid? What are you believing that is hindering you or others? One way to know is to feel the energy behind the truth. There is ultimately peace there. You are the only one who can admit to yourself what the truth is. Set about this journey. You will grow exponentially for it.

It seems most people have a personal motto or a life theme. You may have the motto "Be happy. Life is too short." Perhaps you have a tag line for your business that is a theme for you. What ever your life theme or motto is, it will probably be your biggest challenge as well.

Martin Luther King Jr. and Mohandas K. Gandhi were both social revolutionaries who were dedicated to peace among races, their governments and their people. Both men lived a life theme of peace. As a result, they were asked to examine peace from every angle. To understand and achieve things of greatness seems to require the examination of its opposite force. Peace, violence, kindness, hatred, joy, sorrow, failure, victory, love and fear are all tools that helped those great men understand and achieve peace. They left an indelible mark upon our world through true power - peace.

What is your personal motto? Chances are that you will look at that theme from every angle through the experience of your life. Is your motto your challenge? Notice how you are challenged to live what you believe. Enjoy what your soul is teaching your personality through what you are most drawn to understand. There will be rich learning there for you.

Life Lessons From Your Soul - Wake Up Calls

Wake up calls are what send most of us on the spiritual journey of coming to know the self. When something happens that clearly makes us examine our lives, it is our responsibility to be honest in our thoughtful self examination. This can be a difficult task to undertake. Life's difficult experiences will knock on the door of your heart over and over again until your personality chooses to recognize the wisdom of the soul. One may have realizations that create an opening in the heart and may wake up for a moment, only to fall right back asleep again.

The choice to change comes from the individual who receives the wake up call. It can only come from within as it is a deeply personal decision to allow the soul to show the personality what it is to learn. When you do choose to discover what the soul is showing you, it is so important to receive help from a trained professional who can assist you in your process. Guidance and direction are necessary to learn anything new. You may have raw talent on the piano but until you take lessons to understand the instrument, you will remain unskilled. Choose to gain the skills necessary to develop the personality through the teachings of the soul. Then you can evolve through love.

Life Lessons From Your Soul - Soul Mates

What is a soul mate? Most people believe that it is a romantic partnership that includes a connection far beyond just having life goals in common. Some say that you can have more than one soul mate and that we travel through lifetimes in soul groups. We meet again and again to experience the lessons of life and evolution with one another. We find each other housed in new shells with our personalities getting to know one another again in each lifetime that we commit to creating with one another.

The purpose of the soul mate relationship is for evolution. We evolve through what we can teach one another. When you ask for a soul mate, you can receive one in any packaging possible. They may be your mother, your sister, your teacher, your best friend. You know them by how you feel about them. There is a depth of connection that cannot be put into words. What ever you came in to work on together will be revealed. Your soul mate may be your most difficult relationship or it may be your easiest. You may complete your agreement in a few years or five hundred lifetimes.

The soul mate relationship is just as varied as any relationship can be. The major difference is the feeling. It will be felt and acknowledged by both parties. There is an agreement that is felt and can only be identified by those involved.

My soul mate is Isabel Young Maisano. We met at a birthday party when we were four and she moved next door to me when we were six years old. She now lies in a hospital bed recovering from her heart stopping and a coma. What we agreed to is unfolding each day as my life dramatically shifts. One thing I know is that I will do anything to help her in her time of need. I will help her children and her family in what ever they need. There is a depth of love unparalled by any other relationship I have had to date. What can I say? She's my soul mate.

Life Lessons From Your Soul - Personal Evolution

Personal evolution happens through the partnership between the personality and the soul. The soul is what takes the lesson learned and evolves through the learnings of the personality. It is up to the personality to make the choices that are conducive to evolution.

Certain things seem to be required to help the soul's evolution through the personality. One major requirement is the personality has to first be able to see what it is doing to keep the soul from evolving. This is where honest, thoughtful, self observation comes into play. If you are unable to truly look at yourself and see how your actions effect others, your evolution will be slow and arduous. The tests will become harder and harder until you become honest with yourself. The truth absolutely will set you free.

So, what do you do? When you are in the midst of a test, look at your part in it. Admit where you manipulated, controlled or abused yourself others in your life. How did you do it and why? Admiting is the first step. You can admit what you have done all day long but the real challenge lies in being able to change it. You and only you can make the choice to change how you do things. It is possible but you must truly see what you have done.

The changes you do make will be done by the personality through your choices. Your soul knows what you need to pass the test at hand. It knows what you need to change and exactly how to do it. Allow your soul to lead you to the people, books, information, and situations that will best help you evolve. You will know when they present themselves because you will feel it. You will know you have mastered the test because eventually you will have the people in your life responding to you in a whole different way. It may take time but you have free will and you have the gift of a personality and a soul engaged in evolution together.

Tests and challenges will always come to us. No matter how good we are or how ideal our lives may appear to be, difficult tests will continue to present themselves to us. The personality is often unhappy about the things that are handed to us. Often it wants to avoid the test or ask to take a different one. We cannot. We are given what we are given for a reason - like the song from the 60's based on the scripture from Ecclesiastes - "To everything turn, turn, turn. There is a season turn, turn, turn, and a time to every purpose under heaven. A time to laugh. A time to cry."

As the elevator descended to the first floor of the hospital yesterday, I wearily laid my head against the wall and thought; "I can't do this test, God. This one is too hard." I had never had that thought before. I actually became a bit worried about myself at that thought. I am tired and scared and sad and confused and depleated from this painful test with the very best friend I have ever had.

This morning, I wondered what time it was. As I searched for my cell phone, the little voice in my head said "A time to grieve". I know. This is my time to feel grief. I just have to go through it. I don't know why. I may never know. Or, maybe one day some piece of this will become abundantly clear. I know, beyond all certainty, that equal measure of light will come to me again one day that matches and exceeds the level of darkness that I am currently walking through. I know that to access the soul lesson, my personality must let go and allow this test to run it's course. There is no control here. The personality wants that. There is only surrender. That is the soul of this test.

Life Lessons From Your Soul - Mothering

Mothers come in so many different packages. They don't have to be the traditional wife who carries a child in her womb and gives birth. They can come through the caring woman in your life who will do anything to help you in your time of need. They come through the person who gives a smile or a hug right when you need it. Moms can be store clerks who help you out or the nurse at your bedside who wants to know what the comatose patient in the bed is ike so she can bond with her.

Isabel is one of my favorite moms. She has a rare ability to just allow her children to be who they are without telling them how they should be. She says what she needs to when she fears they are going down a path she can see may not be the primrose one but she always manages to pull back and allow them to make thier own choices. Her strength and steadiness teaches the soul quality of surrender combined with the personality's need to live consequences for choices.

Isabel's daughter Kathryn threw her arms around me today and said "Happy Mother's Day. You are my other mom you know." Tears welled up in my eyes. For years I ached to hear those words. I wanted a child so deeply. Now, I have three to help through a difficult time.

The soul knows what you need. When you ask for what you truly desire, it answers the personality's wish. You just don't know how the answer will come to you. It just does. Gratitude for how ever your soul brings it to you is the lesson. When you can be grateful despite the worst of circumstances, you have mastered a deeply meaningful life lesson.

Life Lessons From Your Soul - Life's Tragedies

You never know when you will be asked to meet a huge challenge in your life. There are so many possibilities that can result in huge emotional upheavals that leave one questioning the meaning of horrifying circumstances. Why do we have to go through these trying events - sudden death, catastrophic illness, accidents, natural disasters? The answer lies within the individual who expereinces the event. The lesson is different for each of us.

I have had the honor of being best friends with Isabel Maisano for 34 years. We met at a birthday party when we were 4 years old and she moved next door to me in Arlington, Virginia when we were 6. Our friendship has withstood being parted by oceans and opposite sides of the continent. Physical distance can never part what lives in the hearts and souls of beings that have agreed to create lives together.

Isabel had a seizure on May 4, 2006, went into cardiac arrest and has been in a coma since. The prospect of losing my best friend is certainly a grim one. The lessons have been flowing like water ever since. They come so fast that I can hardly descriminate. My perception is muddled and I am emotionally spent after 5 days of taking care of her husband and three children - whom I love with all my heart. As I write this, thier oldest daughter, Kathryn emerges from her room late at night in tears, in need of a hug as she deeply misses her mother in the night. God, I want her to come back to us . . .

I have seen a depth of love that just is not witnessed on an ordinary day in the life. I have watched hundreds of people coast to coast who are sending her love for her recovery. I feel so moved to watch the kids, their friends and family spend countless hours in the waiting room deepening their bonds, laughing, crying, hugging and loving one another. I am learning perseverance, strength, and that's it's fine to let go and cry - even if it's in the milk aisle of the grocery store.

I miss my Isabel. I pray she comes back soon. I pray that she fully recovers and will be reading this blog one day with tears in her eyes just like the tears I have in mine. I pray that the best thing will happen for all involved even if it takes us decades to see it. I pray that I can let go of the result that I want to see happen and just trust in the soul to know.

So many lessons. Thank you to Isabel's soul for profoundly enriching my human experience here. You have taught me about the illusion of goodbye and here we go again . . .

Life Lessons From Your Soul - Dreams

What are dreams? If we really only had five senses, it makes no logical sense that we can close our physical eyes and 'see' the movies that play within us that we call dreams.

To the personality, dreams are the ideas and thoughts we have around what we want to create in our lives. You may have the dream to be a famous writer or the best math teacher on faculty. Dreams of the personality are wishes we have for the things we want in our human lives.

Our dreams as we sleep come from a different place. They come as symbolic messages from the soul. The soul works in symbolism, metaphor and feeling. Perhaps the most important aspect of a dream is what feeling it invokes in you. How you felt in the dream is what stays with you after you awake - especially when you have the most vivid of dreams. The lesson lies in the feeling. The feeling is experienced through the emotion that the soul communicates to you through the personality.

Pay attention to your dreams - both waking and sleeping. They can hold the keys to your life lessons.

Life Lessons From Your Soul- Plans

The personality creates infinite ways to make plans. There are flow charts, visioning boards, business plans, writing out your goals and a myriad of other things the personality thinks it needs to 'make things happen'.

Caroline Myss puts it best in a joke she tells on her audio tapes, Spiritual Madness: "You know how to make God Laugh? Tell him your plans." Things happen. They happen through the divine grace of the only permanent part of you - the soul. You may think that things are going to turn out a certain way. Go ahead and think it. Vision it. Chart it. But know that grace happens when we let go of the outcome we may have attached to the thing we THINK we want.

The personality thinks. The soul feels - it simply is. The lesson comes when you can let go. Look at your life. What are you attached to? Where can you apply the life lesson of letting go of an outcome? When you do, it will create the soul current of peace within you. That is when you know you have learned your lesson of letting go of your plans.

Life Lessons From Your Soul - Respecting Self & Others

The best relationships are built on trust. Trust begins first within yourself. The soul sends us many lessons around trust. One way we are asked to learn trust is through setting boundaries that bring harmony to self and others you care about. When the soul sends you a lesson, ask the personality to size up the situation through a simple question: How will this choice affect me and others in my life? If the answer creates pain for you or others, that choice will not create further trust. If the answer creates love then the soul quality of trust can flow freely for you and for others involved.

The soul will always send you experiences to teach you about who you really are. The personality makes the choices through the free will of the soul/personality partnership. It is up to you to choose from wisdom, trust and love.

Life Lessons From Your Soul - Miracles do happen.

Each day, in each moment, there are possiblities for miracles to occur. They seem to fall from the sky upon you and you get to witness the infininte wisdom of the soul. Miracles happen whether you are aware of them or not. When you are aware of the connection with your soul, you will feel and witness the flow that is necessary for the miracle to appear. To particpiate in the miracles sent to you through the soul, become aware of what is going on around you. Watch the people and the opportunities that appear before you. Allow the flow of the moment to guide you to the miracle your soul is effortlessly sending you.

The personality can be the stumbling block to miracles occurring. The greatest way this happens is when the personality holds on to the idea of how things should be. Control, maniupilation and fear can delay the miracle the soul is sending to you. The lesson comes when your personality learns to let go of the attachment you have to a certain outcome. What are you attached to happening and what does your personality need to let go of? The emotions you have around what you are attached to will show you the way. They are the teachers.
